What goes wrong with laminate & vinyl floors if you wait
Worn and stained carpet
Carpet in busy rooms wears down, holds dust and allergens and can trap moisture and odours in damp basements.
Chipped, gapped or lifting planks
Floors installed over an uneven subfloor or without expansion space can gap, peak or lift at the seams.
Squeaks and soft spots
Loose subfloor sheets and weak spots cause squeaks and flex underfoot, and can be a sign of past water damage.
Water damage
Leaks from dishwashers, toilets or doors can swell laminate edges and damage the subfloor underneath.

How Lower Mainland weather affects laminate & vinyl floors
Many Lower Mainland homes have basements or ground level suites where the slab can be cool and damp. Waterproof vinyl plank with the right underlay is often the better choice there, while laminate works well upstairs.
Seasonal humidity swings also make flooring expand and contract. Leaving proper expansion gaps at walls and transitions is essential, or the floor can buckle in the damp months and gap in summer.
Warning signs to watch for
- Worn, stained or matted carpet
- Gaps, chips or lifting edges on planks
- Squeaks or soft spots when you walk
- Swelling near kitchens, bathrooms or doors
- Outdated flooring that does not match the rest of the home
Maintenance tips
- Wipe up spills right away, especially on laminate
- Use felt pads under furniture legs
- Put mats at entrances to catch grit and rain
- Clean with products made for laminate or vinyl
- Keep indoor humidity steady through the seasons

Laminate & Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation: frequently asked questions
Is vinyl plank or laminate better for basements?
Waterproof vinyl plank is usually the better choice for basements and ground level rooms because it handles moisture better than most laminate.
Can you install flooring over my existing floor?
Sometimes. Vinyl plank can often go over a flat, solid existing floor. Carpet always needs to come up first. We check before quoting.
Do you install baseboards with new flooring?
Yes. We can reinstall your existing baseboards or install new ones, plus transitions and quarter round.
